There were 151,153 properties with foreclosure filings against them in 2021. This is equivalent to 0.11 percent of all U.S. housing units, down from 0.16 percent in 2020 and 2.23 percent less than the peak reached in 2010. This latest data comes from ATTOM’s Year-End 2021 U.S. Foreclosure Market Report.
Thee 2021 rate of foreclosure filings – which include default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions – was near the lowest level recorded since tracking began in 2005.
Some speculators had anticipated a surge in foreclosure filings after the government moratorium on expired last year. Strong employment numbers have likely contributed to the foreclosure rate remaining as low as it has been.
Today, conforming no-point 30-year fixed mortgage rates are averaging 3.0 percent and 15-year rates are near 2.25 percent.
